How to choose a startup residency

A good startup residency can change the people around your work. A mediocre one can become an expensive shared calendar. Before joining one, look less at the logo wall and more at the operating details.
Start with the people
Curation is the product. Location, houses and programming matter, but the main reason to join a residency is the people you will repeatedly bump into when nobody is officially networking.
Ask who is already confirmed, what kind of builders the organizers select for, and whether the group has enough range without becoming random.
Check the rhythm
Some residencies are packed with programming. Others are almost entirely unstructured. Neither is automatically better. The question is whether the rhythm matches the work you need to do.
For founders, a strong format usually protects deep work during the day and uses evenings for dinners, salons, demos and optional sessions.
Look for honest constraints
Small groups can be more valuable than large ones. A less famous location can be better than a scene everyone is trying to extract from. A focused week can beat a vague month.
The best residencies are clear about what they are not. They do not promise magic. They create the conditions for people to do what they already wanted to do, but with better company.
